Who was Elizabeth?

In this lesson before we proceed any further we will consider who Elizabeth was. A favourite with film producers her reign has been described as a Golden Age but what were the origins of the woman who would become one of the most reverred English monarchs of all time. This lesson will consider her background and how this shaped her character and personality.

Watch the first clip from the film the Virgin Queen. Write a paragraph in the comments section on this post explaining the key issues that are highlighted in this extract of the film. This is due by Friday 25th January 2008

Hallo one and all my name is Adam Sargeant and i come here before you to give my opinion on the clip (:

The first thing i noticed was the inclusion of a midget (if thats not a harsh word) in this clip. Why miss? was there more smaller people in Tudor England? :S

Also, why was there a monkey?!?!?!? what was wrong with a cat or a dog :S

Moreover, i think Elizabeth and her maids were praying in Latin when the men barged in... which goes against the view that Elizabeth was a Protestant; so they would have been trying to fool the men maybe.

The clip showed me that Mary was unsure how to deal with Elizabeth at the time of her arrest. Although Elizabeth was a rival to Mary, i think she was still showing love for her sister.

There was a short showing of the transubstansination (however you spell it).

And the clip showed that Elizabeth was not questioned as harshly as Thomas Wyatt, as she sat in a chair whereas he was probably being tortured in unspeakable ways :)

AND ALSO!!!! The video took a long time to load... it cheesed me off to be honest!

Hello
This clip showed me that Mary was unable to execute Elizabethas she still loves her as a sister. And Wlizabeth plays on this by writing an emotional letter.

I think Mary should of killed her sister if she wanted the catholic faith so bad all those dead people and for what?

They have been a bit kinder to Mary in the looks department :) Than the film because it isnt Perry:)

Btw did anyone else find the talking monkey well funny?

it apears some identity theft has taken place upon the blog, nice to know people want to be like me.

The video basically portrays the arrest of Elizabeth and her being taken to the tower as a prisoner, where she was interogated about her suposed involvement in the Wyatt's rebellion. Mary saw her sister as a threat to the throne, as many did not wish for Mary to rule anymore and plotted to remove her; if these plans succeeded than it would be likely that Elizabeth would replace her. therefore, Elizabeth was suspected of plotting in the Wyatts rebellion. The video shows Elizabeth being urgently thrown the rosary beads, and she begins to prey in latin. both of these are part of the catholic religion, which Elizabeth did not follow; also before this she hesitates to pick a dress to be seen in by the men that were coming to arrest her, she settled for the plain dress as she was known to be careful with money and did ot spend lavishly, she was constantly devising new ways of saving money. When Mary is shown within the video she apears very nervy and on-edge, this could possibly be due to her fearing her reign over England would be drawn short; or could also be portraying the aparent decline in Mary's mental health later in her reign, such as when she believed she was pregnant but had not actually shared her bed with a man for some time.

The talking monkey was a popular choice as a pet before they were made illegal to import such animals as pets. Catherine of Aragon was painted around the time of her divorce holding a monkey.

Smaller people were often employed as fools in Tudor courts. Later in the victorian time they also attracted crowds as figures of entertainment. Our attitude has changed towards the vertically challenged however they were seen as a novelty.

This clip shows Elizabeth being taken to the Tower after she is suspected to be involved in Wyatt's rebellion. She starts by trying to prove her loyalty to the Queen by praying in Latin, using the Catholic rosary as the guards enter her room. She further pleads her case with a letter to her sister.

Mary is plainly confused about how to deal wit her sister. It is mentioned that Mary made a promise not to condem Elizabeth without proof, and it is proof Mary does not have. Elizabeth is seem to stick to her story, that she had no involvement in the rebellion, and it is clear that the interigators are running out of questions and logical routes of "catching her out".

This video shows how Mary felt that her sister Elizabeth was a threat to her crown. Elizabeth is being accused of being involved in Wyatt's Rebellion and she is taken to the Tower. Wyatt is also in the Tower when she arrives and he is being tortured. There are several times the Catholic faith is involved. Elizabeth covers up her Protestant beliefs by praying in Latin with rosary beads and Mary is taking part in transubstansination. Finally, Elizabeth's carer, Kat, is also shown in the video.

In the video clip the key issues that are highlighted are that Elizabeth was accused of supporting Wyatts rebellion and was sent to the tower by Mary, who didn't not believe Elizabeth when she said she was innocent. Some people did not have any respect for Elizabeth which could show that she did not have a very good reputation. Also her governess Kat Ashley is in the video and stays with Elizabeth while she goes to the tower suggesting that Elizabeth was close to her servants and when Elizabeth was choosing which dress to wear, she was careful possibly because she didn't have much money and was smart by thinkng that she should not look too good or it might have made her look more guilty.

I think at the beginning of the film when Arundel comes in, Elizabeth is praying as a catholic maybe to show that she isn't a heretic or a traitor?

The main issue Elizabeth had to deal with was Mary's paranoia that Elizabeth was plotting against her and trying to over throw her. I think Mary was also convinced by other leading catholics to get rid of Elizabeth as after Mary died, they would'nt want a protestant to take over the thrown.

The clip shows Elizabeth choosing a dress, and then she settles for the plain one. Perhaps to appear to the men that she doesn't spend much money as she is often searching for ways to save and make it. Before the men enter it shows her closeness to Kat Ashley and she also defends her immediatley when they arrive.
Hearing their footsteps Elizabeth picks up the rosary beads and the women begin the pray in Latin. Perhaps this was to fool the men of her loyalty to Catholism and to Mary.
Elizabeth then writes a letter to Mary pleading to reconsider as she is innocent and most importantly her sister. When we see Mary she seems destressed and confused about what to do with Elizabeth. Partly because there is a lot of people advising her and partly because she is her sister afterall.
Elizabeth announces her innocence immediatley as she enters the Tower. Wyatt seems to be getting tortured terribly and Elizabeth is being questioned. They are questioning her as if they are retelling what happened and that she should agree that its true. However Elizabeth stands strong and states her innocence.

Not everyone's opinion of short people has changed, I think they're extremely funny - there should be a travelling circus with them, like there is in other countries, it would bring cash and a boost to the local community for Long Eaton.

Nothing more to say about the clip really, it's already been said by the other historians. I suppose it reflects the great fear of Catholicism at the time. Not only do we know the fear was amongst normal people, but the upper-classes and aristocracy too.

It shows that religion plays a huge part in life during the Marian times, and opposing religions we dealt with just as much as opposing politicians were. The capture of Elizabeth is both a strategically political thing and religious thing.

Before I go, join the anti-monkey apartheid group. It's an organisation to help fellow moneys world wide who suffer needless pain and suffering on a daily basis. There was monkeyism in that video, where the little chap was forced to deliver messages against his will. Fight the attacks on monkies - we will have our day...

Hello,
After watching this video I think the main themes are the persecution of Elizabeth because of her suspision in the wyatt's rebellion, Mary's unstable control of her country (mainly in religious factors) and the feelings of Elizabeth during her sentence. Throughout the video Elizabeth is shown to be wise and strong willed, never giving in to the
threats/accusations against her and respecting Mary's reign by following her command and stating her loyalty towards her. In addition to this, Elizabeth shows her affection towards Mary; showing a strong relationship betweem them that forces Mary to be diplomatic and kind towards Elizabeth, even though she is warned by her close advisors of Elizabeth's threat to her throne and the stability of the countries catholicism

Whilst pondering on various internet sites looking for cheese i found this stuning site.
I belive the clip show that Mary still cares for her sister Elizabeth, despite the fact that she is the largest threat to the throne.
I think this because Mary could have easily had Elizabeth executed for the alleged involvement in the Wyatt's rebellion however she does not have her execucted but imprisons her in the tower of London.

i think that due to Mary's inability to execute her half sister Elizabeth she only heaped more pressure onto her position on the throne.

Also Liz was clever as she and her maids started to pray in latin when the guards were summoned to take her away, this would have been done to try and make the guards believe she actually did believe in Catholicism and that she wasn't a heretic.

I believe that havin a monkey as a pet is a tad wierd im sure that it would run away when it could or even attack her. anyway i believe that mary coulnt kill elizabeth becuase it would be suicide 4 mary becuase she is the Beadle of the protestants think Elizabeth and her maids were praying in Latin when the men barged in... which goes against the view that Elizabeth was a Protestant; so they would have been trying to fool the men maybe. cheers an remember watch oput beadles about

why hasnt it gone up not on

The clip showed that Mary didn't know how to deal with Elizabeth when she locked her up. She knew if she killed Lizzie then Liz would become a martyr.
